About

Established in May 2008 at the University of Toronto, the Dunlap Institute for Astronomy & Astrophysics continues the legacy of the David Dunlap Observatory.

Like the observatory, the Dunlap Institute is developing innovative observational techniques, instruments, telescopes and observatories—including instrumentation for the largest telescopes in the world

The observational research of its astronomers spans the depths of the Universe, from the discovery of planets around nearby stars, to black holes, dark matter, and the study of galaxies at the beginning of time.

It creates a dynamic centre for astronomical research in partnership with the university’s Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics and the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics.

The institute continues a strong commitment to developing the next generation of astronomers through its education programs. And it fosters public engagement in science through a wealth of outreach activities.
