Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics (DAA) and the Dunlap Institute for Astronomy & Astrophysics at the University of Toronto invite applications for a teaching-stream position at the rank of Lecturer, beginning
July 1, 2013.
The position is a joint appointment between the DAA (51%) and the rapidly growing Dunlap Institute (49%). The successful candidate will engage in teaching, pedagogical research, and related administrative work in DAA and have primary responsibility for the development and delivery of a broad range of astronomy-based education and outreach activities in the Dunlap Institute. Applicants must have demonstrated excellence in both teaching Astronomy and outreach programs. The successful candidate must have a PhD in Astronomy and Astrophysics or a related field and at least two years of post-doctoral research experience. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Appointments at the rank of Lecturer may be renewed annually to a maximum of five years. In the fifth year of service, lecturers shall be reviewed and a recommendation made with respect to promotion to the rank of Senior Lecturer.

The Dunlap Institute for Astronomy & Astrophysics and the Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics (DAA) at the University of Toronto invite applications for a tenure-stream appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor to commence July 1, 2013.
The successful applicant will hold a joint appointment between the DAA and the rapidly growing Dunlap Institute. The Institute’s plans include a continuing increase in our complement of faculty and postdoctoral fellows over the next few years. We seek candidates in experimental astrophysics or observational astronomy, and encourage applicants with experience and interest in developing innovative astronomical instrumentation and advanced observing techniques; for instance, those applicable to large and very large optical, infrared, or sub-mm telescopes. Applicants must have earned a Ph.D degree in astronomy and astrophysics or related fields.
The successful applicant will have an outstanding research record and potential to lead the development of the Dunlap Institute, augment the present research strength of the DAA, and have a demonstrated excellence in teaching and research. The Dunlap Institute also welcomes candidates who will advance its commitment to education and community outreach. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

They are active in the BLASTpol and SPIDER balloon borne telescopes, the BRITE and MOST satellites, the Herschel Space Observatory, the Planck Mission, CHIME, the NIRES and OSIRIS instruments at Keck, GPI at Gemini, an Arctic observatory, and SDSS IV/MaNGA, as well as planning and instrument development for the Thirty-Meter Telescope, in which Canada is a consortium partner.

The University of Toronto invites applications for Dunlap Postdoctoral Fellowships within the Dunlap Institute for Astronomy & Astrophysics. This growing unit has a focus on initiating and embracing innovative instrumentation and observational campaigns, with the latest initiative in microwave instrumentation for experimental cosmology. Dunlap Fellows are expected to drive original research independently or in collaboration with others at the University. They have access to design and fabrication facilities and can propose for additional support of their experimental plans. Dunlap Fellows are also active participants in the institute’s outreach/education activities. Exceptional candidates in instrumental, observational, or experimentally related theoretical areas are encouraged to apply.
Toronto researchers enjoy access to many national and international observatories, including Gemini Observatory, Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, and James Clerk Maxwell Telescope and are presently active in the exploitation of the Herschel Space Observatory, MOST, and Planck. Toronto is also actively engaged in developing BIT, BLASTpol, BRITE, CHIME, Gemini F2T2, Gemini Planet Imager, JWST, Keck/NIRES, the South Pole Telescope, SPIDER, an Arctic observatory, novel near-infrared spectrographs for large telescopes, first light instrumentation for the Thirty Meter Telescope, as well as involvement in a space dark energy mission. Major computing capacity is available in the University’s SciNet facility, among the most powerful in the world.
The appointment is initially for two years, with an expectation of renewal for a third on satisfactory performance. The fellowship includes a competitive annual stipend with funds for research, travel expenses, relocation, and the opportunity to request additional research funds from the Dunlap Institute. Appointment at the Research Associate level will be considered where appropriate. The expected starting date is September 1, 2013.

DUNLAP INSTITUTE POSTDOCTORAL POSITION IN INTEGRAL FIELD SPECTROSCOPY

The Dunlap Institute for Astronomy & Astrophysics at University of Toronto invites applicants with an expertise in integral field unit (IFU) spectroscopy and data processing development to apply for a postdoctoral research position.
The successful applicant will work on the upcoming Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA: PI Kevin Bundy) project, which is one of three After SDSS-III (AS3) programs to be conducted on the Sloan 2.5-metre telescope.
MaNGA is an optical fiber-based multi-object IFU that will target 10,000 galaxies over a six-year campaign, with a scheduled first light in fall 2014. The successful candidate will participate in the development of MaNGA’s data processing and analysis pipeline with
Prof Shelley Wright and other MaNGA team members in Toronto,
Dr. David Law and
Dr. Anne-Marie Weijmans. Independent research will also be encouraged and supported during the postdoctoral position.
The appointment is for two years with an expectation of renewal for a third year on satisfactory performance. The expected start date is fall 2012. The salary range will be from $46,000 – $53,000 CAD per year, and will be based on experience of the successful applicant. An annual research stipend will be given for research related expenditures. Relocation costs will be subsidized following University of Toronto policies and based on the distance of the move.
A PhD in astronomy or physics is required. Experience with data processing and software development is preferable, although applicants whose studies have primarily focused on IFU observations and analysis will be considered.
