Every two weeks, the Dunlap Institute hosts an Astronomical Instrumentation Discussion featuring a guest speaking about an instrumentation-related subject. The informal discussion group consists primarily of graduate students, postdocs and faculty from the Dunlap, the Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics and the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics at the University of Toronto. The discussion group helps build instrumentation expertise at the U of T and provides students interested in instrumentation with insight into possible career paths.

Guests include astronomers, as well as experts from industry and instrumentation-related fields, ensuring a diverse but focused range of topics and expertise. Support from the Dunlap Institute makes it possible to invite guests from outside the university. The discussion is organized by Dunlap Fellow Suresh Sivanandam, an experimental astrophysicist who has been with the institute since 2010.
