Tooves gets Origin call-up

Manly's inspirational captain, Geoff Toovey, was given his long-awaited State of Origin call-up yesterday, but rampaging winger John Hopoate was shown the door as NSW attempt to avoid a 3-0 whitewash at the hands of Queensland next Monday night. Prop Mark Carroll was also reinstated to the Blues' line-up after missing last week's 20-12 loss at the MCG.

The choice of Toovey was not totally unexpected after his sound performance for the Sea Eagles in their impressive win over Brisbane. The Sea Eagles No 7 admitted State of Origin selection had been in the back of his mind as he ran on to Brookvale Oval, but he tried to dismiss talk of it after being disappointed in the past. Toovey, who has replaced Newcastle's Andrew Johns, will partner the dumped half-back's brother, Matthew, in a lively-looking scrumbase combination.

Hopoate, who lost out to North Sydney flanker David Hall, can consider himself a little unlucky after figuring prominently in the win over the Broncos. As expected, Steve Menzies and Terry Hill retained their spots in the NSW side, while Danny Moore has again been named in the Queensland squad.
