28 Aug 1996: Solo out

In a major blow for the Eagles, form forward Soloman Haumono has severely injured his arm and is out for the season. A decision will be made in a few months on his future playing career.

25 Aug 1996: A belting at Brookie

Manly have bounced back with a 42-12 thrashing of Western Suburbs at Brookvale earlier today. It completes an undefeated season at home for the Eagles, and virtually assures them of the minor premiership. Their final game for the preliminary rounds will be against South Sydney at the SFS.

24 Aug 1996: Napper stays on

Despite suggestions to the contrary, Cliff Lyons has re-signed with the Eagles for two more years. Des Hasler, however, has announced his retirement, and will take up an administration/development position at the club.

18 Aug 1996: Eagles stumble... again

The Manly side appears to have hit a late-season slump, yet another ordinary performance seeing them go down 18-14 to Penrith earlier today. Sloppy football and lack of discipline were the Eagles' downfall - they outscored the Panthers three tries to two, but gave away six points from penalty goals. An off day with the boot from goalkickers Matt Ridge and Jack Elsegood did not help matters.

Despite the loss, Manly hold on to top spot on the Optus Cup Ladder, two points clear of Brisbane. The Eagles' next game will be against Western Suburbs on Sunday at Brookvale Oval. A win will not only virtually guarantee Manly the minor premiership, but can round off an unbeaten record at home for 1996.

17 Aug 1996: Des departs?

This morning's Daily Telegraph has reported that Des Hasler will not be re-signing with Manly for 1997, and may be joining South Sydney. The Penrith junior has been with the Eagles since 1984.

12 Aug 1996: Tigers tamed

In what has been described as one of the most boring games ever played, Manly comfortably defeated the Sydney Tigers 18-0 yesterday at Brookvale Oval. Both teams were simply awful in attack, fumbling the ball and lacking direction. However, Manly's trademark defence was still up to the task, keeping their opponents to nil. The highlight of the game was an altercation between Dan Stains and Soloman Haumono - Stains incurred the penalty, got sent to the sin bin, and rather decidely lost the fight. Among some of the better performers for Manly were Matthew Ridge, Des Hasler, Jim Serdaris and Jack Elsegood.

Manly have now wrapped up a top four spot on the Optus Cup Ladder. Still three points clear of second place, the Eagles can go one step closer to securing the minor premiership when they travel to Penrith on Sunday. The reserve grade side are now just one point outside the eight, after a convincing 44-8 win on Sunday.

06 Aug 1996: Sharks scrape home

Manly continued their puzzling inability to win at Shark Park last night, when they were defeated 12-10 by Cronulla. The Eagles trailed 6-0 at half time after a poor first half with little possession, but came home strongly after the break to post two tries. Suffering concussion, Matthew Ridge kicked an uncharacterstic 1 from 3 to see the fast-finishing Sea Eagles narrowly go down.

Manly are still three points clear at the top of the ladder with four games to play. They play the Sydney Tigers at Brookvale on Sunday.
