31 Mar 1997: Easy win

Manly beat the Crushers 36-16 on Saturday night.

22 Mar 1997: Bears beaten

Manly beat North Sydney 12-8 last night in a real arm-wrestle of a match at Brookvale Oval. The Eagles scored all their points in the first half, thanks to tries by Daniel Gartner and Craig Innes. The latter was certainly the best try of the season so far, with fantastic lead up work by Menzies and Field.

The second half was very dour - handling and ball movement from both sides left much to be desired. However, the trademark titanium defence of the Manly outfit held the Bears out. From where I was sitting, it seemed Geoff Toovey scored a fair try in the dying stages, but referee David Manson ruled that the captain lost the ball over the line. Never mind - Manson has given us plenty of favours in recent times...

Best for Manly were Field (once again outstanding), Carroll, Gartner and Serdaris, while big replacement prop Billy Weepu continues to impress. Cliff Lyons made a successful return from injury, playing almost half the game. Both David Gillespie (groin) and Jim Serdaris (knee) had to leave the field, and are in doubt for next week.

Question for the week: what is Scott Fulton doing in first grade?

Next Saturday night sees the Eagles travel to Brisbane to take on the South Queensland Crushers.

18 Mar 1997: Tierney gets a week

Prop Neil Tierney has been suspended for one match for punching Mark Coyne in last week's game.

15 Mar 1997: Another close shave

It was another nail-biter last night at Jubilee as Manly got home 18-14 over St George. The Eagles turned in a fabulous first half with great tries to Field (2) and Serdaris to go into the break leading 16-0. But wht 30 minutes to go, an 80m intercept by Mark Bell turned things around and St George came to life. Poor handling by Manly didn't help matters, and the Dragons stormed home with two more tries to get within 4 points. Despite Neil Tierney being sent off in the dying minutes, the Eagles held on to make it two narrow wins from two this year.

Craig Field was outstanding, with another great kicking game and some sharp running and passing - Cliff Lyons will have his work cut out regaining his first grade spot when he returns from injury. Other good players for Manly were Gartner, Kosef, Serdaris, Carroll and Hopoate.

Manly have their first home game of the season on Friday night, when they face up to the Old Enemy, the North Sydney Bears.

12 Mar 1997: No changes

Manly have named an unchanged line-up for Friday night's game against St George. Cliff Lyons is still recovering from a back injury.

08 Mar 1997: Narrow victory

In a scrappy but entertaining game of football earlier tonight, the Sea Eagles started the season with a win when they beat Balmain 14-10. The Tigers led a disorganised Manly outfit 8-4 at the break, but some sparks of the 1996 Eagles side emerged late in the game as tries to Terry Hill and Jim Serdaris wrapped up the win.

Best for Manly were Toovey, Carroll, Gartner, Menzies and Serdaris. Craig Field, in his premiership debut for the club, displayed an excellent kicking game, and set up a good try for Terry Hill in the first half. However, he showed a tendency to put on moves which at times the second rowers and centres found hard to read. Undoubtedly combinations will begin to gel once he settles into the team.

Goal kicking may be a problem for Manly in 1997 - Field kicked 0 from 2, and Innes managed 1 from 2. Meanwhile in reserve grade, fullback Shannon Nevin had a good game with the boot, and generally played solidly. With Matt Ridge now departed, surely Nevin has done enough to secure a first grade spot?

And finally, special mention to the Optus Cheer Squad. They made the girls from Brookvale look very ordinary indeed.

The Eagles' next game is on Friday night at Kogarah. St George will no doubt be eager to make up for the result in last year's Grand Final.

07 Mar 1997: Bring on the footy!

The Optus Cup finally begins tonight with Parramatta playing North Sydney. Expectations are high that the Sea Eagles can repeat their 1996 performance and take out the premiership. With the likes of Toovey, Menzies, Gartner, Kosef and Innes all ready to fire in 1997, and with the addition of Craig Field to the side, Manly will certainly be hard to beat.

In 1997, we're faced with two rival competitions. While there's sure to be plenty of rivarly and sniping between the two camps, I encourage supporters of all clubs to forget about the big money running the show, get down to the game, and cheer on your local side. Let's hope we see some good footy in the year to come!

04 Mar 1997: Romp over St Marys

The Eagles had an easy 50-6 win over Metropolitan Cup side St Marys on Friday night at Brookvale Oval. Geoff Toovey made a successful return from injury.
