28 Dec 1997: Farewell, Spud

Mark Carroll has played his last game for Manly. Spud has been granted a release from his contract with the Sea Eagles, and will most likely be joining the London Broncos in 1998.

23 Dec 1997: Peace in our time

The three year split between the ARL and Super League looks to be over. A joint 20-team competition is planned for 1998, with reductions to 16 teams in 1999 and 14 teams in 2000. Sydney teams will thus be facing mergers or extinction or extinction over the next few years. As the strongest of the Sydney clubs, Manly are well-placed to survive this rationalisation. Performance on the field will be critical, however. What are your thoughts on the peace deal? Send me your comments.

In other news, John Hopoate looks set to stay with the Sea Eagles for 1998. Hopoate had previously been linked to South Sydney and to Canterbury-Bankstown. Manly have lost their major sponsor, Pepsi, and will most likely be reverting to a more traditional strip in the coming season. Announcement of a new sponsor is expected to be made soon.

03 Nov 1997: Hopoate linked to Souths

There have been suggestions that John Hopoate may be joining South Sydney next season. Meanwhile, Mark Carroll is looking likely to remain with the Sea Eagles for the 1998 season.

14 Oct 1997: Spud to leave?

Manly have given Mark Carroll permission to negotiate with other clubs for his services. Spud has another 12 months to go on his contract, but Manly have told him that they may not be able to maintain his current salary in 1999 and beyond.

09 Oct 1997: MacDougall guilty

Adam MacDougall has been suspended until Round 3, 1998, for treading on Geoff Toovey's head. A fair verdict? What do you think?

08 Oct 1997: Judiciary hearing

Newcastle centre Adam MacDougall will tonight appear before the ARL judiciary, after being cited for stomping on Geoff Toovey's head during the Grand Final.

Meanwhile, check out The Manly Haters Club - quite possibly the silliest site on the web.
